where she addressed party members with parts of her speech lifted from first lady Michelle Obama’s 2008 speech, although it was revealed the person who helped write the speech offered to resign, but the campaign rejected the request. Can fear of terror and sickness mar Rio Olympics?

The Olympic Games which has its roots from the ancient Greece is a uniting factor as well as means of promoting healthy competition, diplomacy and friendship among nations. It has evolved from a small time sports in early Athens to a mega international fiesta in the contemporary world with accompanying celebration at its commemoration every four years. With time, the game attracted unprecedented fans, bringing more contestants as additional events are featured. For instance, when the Olympic returned to Athens in the summer of 2004, more than a century after, the number of participating countries reached 201 and 11,000 athletes competed at the event.
With topical world events, one can deduce that some activities are becoming threat to the peaceful and successful hosting of any gathering, especially one with an international undertone such as the Olympics.  Of visible threat to the Rio Olympics is the issue of terrorism and the Zika virus.

Terrorism and Olympics

The first recorded act of terrorism in Olympic history was witnessed in the early hours of 5th September 1972, when a team of Palestinian terrorists attacked the Israeli camp at the Summer Olympics in Munich West Germany. The action changed the perception of the world as it led to hostage taking and eventual killing of nine Israelis after failed negotiations.  Subsequently, intense security was put into consideration in the preparation of any Olympic game. Although the Brazilian authorities and Olympic officials have stressed their readiness to effectively secure participants and ensure a safe experience for the over 500,000 visitors expected in the game, the growing notoriety of ISIS activities and its numerous sympathizers are threatening the game. Latest incidents around France Belgium and Germany were mass-casualty terror attacks has been recorded from ISIS sympathizers is becoming worrisome. More alarming is the discovery of a group of Brazilian youths who authorities described as ISIS fans and are planning isolated attacks during the game. Although the said youths have been confirmed to be amateurs, no one can adequately ascertain their level of involvement.

Zika Virus
The emergence of the Zika virus in the South American country is another major threat to the Olympics. The Zika, a virus which carries a number of negative birth defects is transmitted by mosquitoes and can affect the newborn of an infected person, causing serious autoimmune disorder likened to the Guillain-Barre syndrome. In a swift bid to protect their unborn generation, many athletes have decided to back out from this year’s Olympic competition. For instance, the World’s number one golfer, Jason Day, has announced his withdrawal from the game, declaring his decision as concerns about the possible transmission of the Zika virus and the potential risks it may present to his wife's future pregnancies and future family members. The tennis world has also witnessed a setback in this Olympic as four top players announced their intention to skip the game.

These trends are certainly not good for the Rio Olympics, but more concern is for the future of Olympics, as new trends are bound to emerge in future. Careful measures need to be taken into consideration, to ensure the Olympics game are sustained for our generations to come.

Goodbye video cassette recorder (VCR)

VCRs, which were introduced in the 1970s for family entertainment, is finally at the verge of retirement. The powerful entertainment machine is retiring based on the known fact that its usefulness has been taken over by the DVD technology. This is made known the by Nikkei Newspaper, which announced that the last video cassette recorder (VCR) in Japan will be produced by the end of the month. Other companies known for producing VCR have since closed down owing to low patronage.
This goes to show technology evolves and how our lives have been enhanced by it. For me, fond memories of this machine, dates back to my primary school days, when people with this equipment, are revered as elites. I used to walk quite some distance to watch movies uncle’s house, as he was the only known person having such item in those days. His own looks like the one in this second picture.

How time flies; The generations to come would need to visit a museum before they understand what a VCR looks like.

Hobbies to money spinning venture: the 21st century business model

Recent trends revealed rise in number of individuals attaining prominence through hobby inspired entrepreneurship venture, thereby opening new phase of achievers contributing positively to the world economy.  Further analysis brings us to realization that most of these individuals achieved such enviable status, not by accident but, by looking inwards to identify opportunities when it confronts them.

In the world of sports, examples like these have been norm for decades; however, other accomplishments in life have produced success with the replication of same model. A holistic look at hobbies which brought about fame and fortune will do well to paint a clearer picture of this discussion.  Three aspects of human activity prominent in these context are Sports, Entertainment and Business.
Early realisation and dedication has led majority of individuals into developing particular skills to enviable heights. Anyone can do most of these simple tasks like running, photography, swimming, singing, cleaning, driving, speaking, decoration, cracking jokes and even writing, but the difference between achieving perfection and not achieving it, depends on mindset of the individual involved, dedication, focus and hard work. Professional wrestlers, footballers, prolific writers and other proficient personalities do not only enjoy title and fame that these practice offers, rather, they improve the economic value and status of their lives thereby bringing the person to position of relevance in society.
We can deduce good examples from Graziano Pelle, the famous footballer quoted by Forbes to be the
5th highest paid player in the world in 2016 as his recent contract to a Chinese club would be fetching him a weekly pay of £260,000. The most paid according to records in 2016 being Cristiano Ronaldo who is estimated to worth a whopping $96m in combined earning. The two examples are but nothing compared to thousands of individuals who have turned their hobbies in sports to a live worthy of emulation.
Aside the money earned from the skills the individual’s personality as time goes on, transforms to portray more than one positive attribute either as motivators for other aspiring in the field or become entirely a model for the growing youths. In other circumstances, skills can be used for pushing a message to the world or championing a curse. Of particular reference is the Late Mohammed Ali of blessed memory. He was a distinguished boxer labelled as the ‘Greatest’ who used his talent to preach more than one message. He stood for many things to many people

such as freedom fighter, black movement activist; he represented African Americans and many other struggles.  According to the Wikipedia online dictionary, “He is widely regarded as one of the most significant and celebrated sports figures of the 20th century”.  He played a major role in the resistance for black domination with his actions, comments and activism. He had the title of sports personality of the century by the BBC among others.
Other sectors in sports have gotten representation of personalities who have contributed immensely to the definition of living, entertainment and progress in the society through their distinguished efforts towards perfecting their skills. We have names like the William Sisters in Tennis, Tiger Woods in Golf, Magic Johnson in Basket Ball, and the list goes on.

 The same goes for the entertainment sector where people who achieved success through perfecting their hobbies rule. The movie industries like Hollywood and Bollywood have accomplished actors, screen writers and Directors who attained prominence through their works. They also, like their sports counterparts, not only achieve fame but monetary incentives as their chosen field expose them as models for advertisement of products and give them opportunity for investing in other forms of business.  A typical example is a particular couple Jay Z and Beyonce’ who according to Forbes
Jay Z and Beyonce’

Magazine are 2016 highest paid celebrity couple with estimated worth of $107.5 million.
The 21st Century business world consists of individuals of different ideas, experiences and backgrounds who transited from enjoying their hobbies to opening solution driven investments, with passion and dedication piloting simple hobbies to multimillion businesses. Hundred years ago, who would have believed that creating a forum for discussing personal issues and simply “Being your brother’s keeper” could be a profitable venture? Oprah Winfrey who is currently North America’s first and only multi billionaire black person, started her carrier as a co-anchor in a local radio station at the age of 19 and from there, rose to become what she is when she took her passion to the next level. Many personalities evolved from helping neighbours cook at home to become Event Managers, from making class mates laugh to become renowned stand-up comedian, from sewing clothes at home to become fashion designer, from being a handyman to become a construction giant.
Things to take home
  • The lists of skills that lead to huge investments are inexhaustible and one needs to be very observant to know what skills can be relevant in ones immediate environment.
  • Having the dream and focus is the only motivation to spur you while the intention is still in the planning stage; don’t let it die;
  • There is need to look inwards and assess the aspect of our lives we can harness to become solution providers; you have plenty of it.
  •  There is need to attain level of mastery in the chosen skill before providing services, in order not to encounter discouragement when faced with a difficult task; make effort to perfect in it.
  • Since contributing your skills to the society is a lifetime business, rendering the service with little or no charges to initial customers should not hurt, take it as part of advertisement.

Now that you have read this, just practice the 4 last points.

5 Simple Actionable things to making a positive and memorable Valentine’s Day

What does Valentine’s Day mean to you?
Traditionally it is meant to be a celebration of love in honour of person(s) who died in the campaign that lovers should be together.
However, in this present age, Valentine’s Day has been associated with various forms of anti-social behaviour on the part of youths. Activities such as sexual promiscuity, alcohol overindulgence, drug abuse and overdose, reckless driving and even rape have been recorded on days like this; what an exhibition of the direct opposite. These ills often resulted to careless deaths and permanent disabilities to people who hitherto would have been appreciating the splendour of life, friendship and love on such day.
There is need for reorientation and refocusing during this love season. It would be of more value if the celebration is observed with sharing, exchange of gifts, and visits to the sick, the aged, the prisoners and the lonely. It will make love radiate more in the society and the world at large.
Today, many roam the streets without shelter over them to call their home, others are not sure when and where their next meal is coming, some homeless street children have never experienced love or affection while others who had homes before suddenly found themselves on the street as result  of circumstances they could not change.
There are different ways of celebrating this love feast in a manner that would impact positively to the society and reverberate love throughout the world.
Here are 5 ideas you may choose from, to promote the much needed love for the day:
1.       Visiting the prisons
The Prison is a very lonely place where inmates feel dejected always. Visitation of such places with or without gift items would make a great difference on this day;
2.       Visiting the Old People’s home
 The Old People’s home is another place that requires our attention, it is good to reassure the elderly we still appreciate them; actions such as decorating their home with flowers will go a long way;
3.       Providing meal for the destitute, this may entail co-opting friends and co-workers to contribute substantially to feed the number of needy around you for the day;
4.       Taking a break from your busy schedule to appreciate your partner and children as the case may be is a good way of celebrating the Val.
5.       Make phone calls to old friends and send goodwill messages. This would make meaningful impact in the hearts of friends and relatives.
Resolve today to join the team of youths making this world a better place; choose one of the above actions today.
