The former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi has been handed
down a death sentence by an Egyptian court. According to the judge, the
sentence was in relation to series of mass prison breaks which took place in
2011.
Morsi was among more than 100 defendants being given the same
sentence. However, the sentence can be appealed and still needs to pass a procedure which
includes going through the government’s Islamic law interpreter (Grand Mufti)
for final recommendation or opinion. The court has slated its final decision for June 21st. Morsi was elected into power in June 2012 and barely stayed a
year before being ousted in July 2013 by the army following wide spread
demonstrations.
