Enthusiasts come within inches of death after military aircraft misses the runway
A crowd of about 1,000 had gathered to watch the final landing of the Transall C-160 military plane as it approached the Ballenstedt airfield in Saxony-Anhalt, central Germany. All appeared to be going smoothly until the pilot suddenly reported that he could not see the start of the runway from his cockpit - and came down on a side road where many of the spotters were standing. As some fled screaming in terror, the braver or more foolhardy stood their ground (circled), keeping their cameras trained on the 31-ton aircraft to catch every second of the action - video of which has now emerged online.
Nelson Mandela released from hospital
Nelson Mandela |
Nelson Mandela was
discharged from hospital on Wednesday night after undergoing nearly three weeks
of treatment for a lung infection and gallstones.
A spokesman for President Jacob Zuma
confirmed that Mr Mandela was transported to his home in
Johannesburg’s Houghton neighbourhood, where he will continue to recover under
the close watch of his personal doctors.
Mr Mandela, who is 94, was flown on December
8 from his rural residence in Qunu village to the capital Pretoria, where he
spent 19 days in hospital receiving treatment for a recurring lung infection.
Doctors also discovered that he had developed
gallstones and he had surgery to have them removed.
It was his longest hospital stay since coming
out of prison in 1990 after 27 years in detention.
South Africa’s first black president spent
Christmas Day in hospital, where he was visited by wife Graca Machel and
members of the Mandela family, along with Mr Zuma, who said he was “looking
much better” and “in good spirits”.

30-year-old
Rafael Nunes has become the latest face to go viral after he was spotted by a
tourist in the Brazilian town of Curitiba. His photograph was posted online last week and within days had more than 40,000 shares on facebook
However, the
young man's desolate expression contrasts
with his stunning blue eyes, which have captured the hearts of
thousands. According to his mom,Nunes, a former successful model has
been homeless for a year due to drug related problems that led to his
downfall. Although it

Colin Powell endorses Obama again
Colin Powell, the secretary of State for President George W. Bush, endorsed President Obama for re-election Thursday.
Powell also backed Obama four years ago against John McCain.
Speaking on CBS' This Morning, Powell said Republican candidate Mitt Romney appeared to shift positions during this week's foreign policy debate. "So I am not quite sure which Gov. Romney we would be getting with respect to foreign policy," he said.
Powell said the economy is improving and Obama got the United States out of war in Iraq and is starting to get the United States out of Afghanistan. "I signed on for a long patrol with President Obama, and I don't think this is the time to make such a sudden change," he said. I think we ought to keep on the track we are on."
Powell, who flirted with his own presidential bid in the 1990s, said he did not tell Obama or Romney in advance about his decision. "This is my decision by looking at this as a citizen," he said, adding that he speaks to Obama regularly.

Here comes the 'poop-powered' motorcycle
Japan's
best-known toilet maker on Wednesday unveiled a "poop-powered"
motorcycle that can travel as far as 180 miles on a tank filled with animal
waste.
Billed as
the world's first waste-powered vehicle, the three-wheeler has a toilet in
place of a regular seat and huge paper roll at the back.
But as a
young female model climbed aboard for a test drive Wednesday, toilet giant TOTO
was quick to point out that she would not supply the "gas".
"The
biogas it uses as fuel is not made from human waste. It's made from livestock
waste and sewage," Kenji Fujita, a company spokesman, told reporters in a
Tokyo suburb.
"We
hope to raise awareness among customers about our green campaign through
development of environmentally-friendly products such as water-saving
showerheads and water-saving toilets," Fujita added.
The
company -- which makes toilets equipped with an array of features including
heated seats, water jets with pressure and temperature controls, and ambient
background music -- has no plans to commercialise the motorcycle
